From humble beginnings to a record-breaking start to international career, Yashasvi Jaiswal is on Cloud Nine. After smashing 171, the second-highest score by an Indian Test debutant, he has a message for fans, “this is just the start.” Jaiswal’s knock and Ravichandran Ashwin’s record-breaking 12/131 in the match helped India take a 1-0 lead in the IND vs WI Test series.
“Hard work pays off! Great team performance to mark my IN debut and happy to have helped the team with some runs! Thankful to everyone who’s contributed in my journey so far, but this is just the start,” Yashasvi Jaiswal said in a heartfelt post on social media handles on Saturday.

India’s search for a left-hander Test opener has finally come to an end momentarily with Jaiswal smashing a century on his Test debut. Although West Indies is a struggling Test side, the knock will give both Jaiswal and India Cricket Team a lot of confidence.
Despite playing against a weaker side, Jaiswal showed composure. He never looked in a hurry and that paid off. He stitched a record 229-run opening stand with Rohit Sharma.
At a time when India are struggling with opening spot, Jaiswal’s form gives India a huge boost.
Yashasvi Jaiswal milestones on debut
- Jaiswal scored the fifth highest score in Tests on debut as an opener with 171. Sri Lanka’s Brendon Kuruppu holds the record scoring 201 on debut against New Zealand in 1987.
- 171 is the third-highest score on debut by an Indian in Tests. Shikhar Dhawan holds the record of scoring 187 against Australia in 2013.
- In away Tests, he broke Sourav Ganguly’s record of scoring 131 on Test debut against England.
- Jaiswal also faced 387 balls, the highest by an Indian on Test debut.
- He is also the first Indian on debut to be involved in a two-century stands.
- The Mumbaikar is also the youngest to score 150+ on Test debut (21 years, 196 days).
