IPL 2023 Covid-19 Guidelines: It’s time for IPL and unfortunately also for Covid-19. Over the last week or so, India has reported a steady rise in the number of Covid-19 cases in the country with a positivity rate also up to 30% in some states. As IPL 2023 returns to jam-packed stadiums in home and away format, the scare is once again back. BCCI is already mulling reviving a strict mask policy. However, as for the crowd and restrictions go, BCCI will follow the Health Ministry and state guidelines. IPL begins with GT vs CSK on Friday at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. “There is no scare as such. We will follow the protocols set by the Union Health Ministry as well as the state governments. All over India, mask is still mandatory even though people don’t follow it. But yes, players, support staff, franchise staff and ground staff have all been advised to follow health and safety protocols,” a senior BCCI official told InsideSport.

It should be noted that, unlike the ICC, BCCI has not revised its COvid-19 policy. While the ICC allows even positive players to take part, BCCI has mandated a minimum 7-day isolation period for players. Players must be isolated until they return three negative results. The rule will apply to close contacts as well.

BCCI has even instructed the players’ family members to be careful and not venture out without masks. A player who tests positive will be moved to a different isolation room. The entire team and the family members will have repeated COVID tests. However, the match will go ahead without any problem. Furthermore, immediate contacts will not be in isolation.

IPL 2023 COVID-19 guidelines:

  • Players who have tested positive for COVID-19 will have to isolate for 7 days.
  • They need to test negative three times on RT-PCR on the 5th day to exit the isolation.
  • No immediate contacts will be isolated unlike earlier.
  • BCCI has adviseed players and support staff to follow state-mandated COVID guidelines amid soaring cases.
  • Players have also been advised to limit interaction with fans even though there will be no bio-bubble.
  • However, unlike last time, BCCI has not contacted any agency for COVID-19 tracking.
  • Teams’ medical team will monitor the players and those with symptoms will be isolated.

“There is nothing to panic. All are vaccinated and even have had their boosters. But as a precaution players will need to follow all Covid protocols like masks, limiting interactions etc. Yes, ICC has allowed players but we still feel precaution is important in this case. That is why players won’t be playing with a positive test,” the official said.
