IPL 2023: IPL franchises have been thrown into a fix as the NCA will monitor player workload during the ongoing IPL 2023. The decision comes after BCCI grew wary of player injuries, with Shreyas Iyer, Jasprit Bumrah, Rishabh Pant and Prasidh Krishna all out for a significant period. While there is no official diktat, the Indian cricket board will keep an eye on their core stars with the WTC Final and the 2023 ODI World Cup looming large in the coming months. While the BCCI opted against a special workload plan for their at-risk stars, the NCA has sent fitness reports to all franchises ahead of the IPL. The physios have warned trainers and physiotherapists of each Indian Premier League franchise to not over bowl players. As per the plan, India stars will focus on strength and conditioning during the first half before extensive net sessions during the second half of the tournament.

The BCCI have placed no limit on the number of games or overs bowled on the players. However, with constant travelling and a packed schedule franchises could have their hands forced into taking such decisions. MI captain Rohit Sharma is likely to skip games in between to manage his workload. Whether or not the rest of his team follow remains to be seen.

“Franchises have been told that the Indian team bowlers should be especially used with caution. IPL teams should not over-bowl them in the nets. They can focus more on strengthening and training. Players can do fielding drills but till the first week of May, franchises shouldn’t push them, ” a BCCI official told Indian Express.

In the last 6 months, Jasprit Bumrah and Deepak Chahar paid the price of a rushed return. Even Ravindra Jadeja’s return was delayed after the NCA tried to rush him to competitive cricket. Now, the Indian cricket board is taking a cautious approach with WTC Final and the ODI World Cup on the horizon.

The IPL 2023 kicks off on March 31, with Chennai Super Kings facing the Gujarat Titans. The IPL final is likely to be played on May 28, just a week before the World Test Championship Final. India will face Australia in the WTC Final at the Oval starting on June 7.
