In a recent interview with EspnCricinfo, Ravi Shastri opened up about the violation of the constitution in the Indian cricket team’s selection committee meetings. Shastri revealed that there were individuals present in these meetings who should not have been there. During his seven-year stint as head coach, Shastri was never invited to attend a selection committee meeting.
“I have zero first-hand experience. Seven years I was part of the team, I never went near a selection meeting. I wasn’t invited either. In the last few years, there were few others in the selection meeting as well which was against the constitution,” said Ravi Shastri.
In a call for change to the selection process, Shastri emphasized that the head coach should be permitted to attend meetings. Even if not able to vote, to gain knowledge about the selectors’ opinions and plans.
“You spend a lot of time with the boys, it’s important, even if not in voting capacity. But to hear what the selectors are thinking, what is their train of thoughts are. And then to decide what could be the right thing for the side. I have zero idea how it starts, how it finishes, who are there in the meeting,” Shastri added.
In 2014, Shastri became a part of the Indian cricket team as a director during the England tour. He remained in the Director’s position until the T20 World Cup in 2016. Following Anil Kumble’s one-year term as head coach that ended after the 2017 Champions Trophy, Shastri replaced him. Shastri held the head coach position for four and a half years until the T20 World Cup in 2021.
