BCCI has asked its contracted bowlers to scale up their workload during the IPL in the build-up to the World Test Championship Final. With only a week’s gap after the IPL 2023 Final, Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj, Umesh Yadav, Shardul Thakur and others are warranted to bowl as many as 33 overs every week. As per the report, Indian players have been given a target of 200 deliveries a week and report the same to the concerned authorities. With bowlers bowling only 4 over spells in IPL games, the idea is to get the Indian bowlers used to bowling long spells with the red ball.

200 deliveries are roughly 34 overs, compassing an average session in Test Cricket. While the Diktat is largely for the fast bowlers, spinners Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel are also expected to follow the directive.

“The two balls are very different and it’s important that the players amp up their workload to be ready. They will hardly get a week to prepare for the WTC Final. But of course, they will be monitored closely by the franchise physios and they will report directly to the NCA on workload,” the BCCI official stated.

The BCCI Selection Committee led by Shiv Sunder Das will meet in April to pick India’s squad for the upcoming World Test Championship Final. Rohit Sharma‘s side qualified after New Zealand beat Sri Lanka in the 1st Test. IPL 2023’s league stage will end on May 21, 16 days before the commencement of the championship match, and players from eliminated franchises may be sent over to UK immediately after as a way to help them become more familiar with the playing environment.
