IND vs WI 2nd T20: ‘Wasting talent’… Netizens furious as Sanju Samson lets go of rare opportunity

After managing 12 in the 1st T20, Sanju Samson perished to Akeal Hosein's turn in Guyana, failing to make another opportunity count.

For the first time, Sanju Samson had got four opportunities in a row. It’s as rare as Sanju scoring a hat-trick of fifties. Yet, in national colours, Samson continues to be a hit and a miss. On Sunday, in the IND vs WI 2nd T20, it was another miss. The Rajasthan Royals captain failed against Akeal Hosein’s spin and fell cheaply for 7 runs. With Asia Cup 2023 and World Cup 2023 around, he needs to make every opportunity count. Yet, he failed and netizens were not happy with it.

How Sanju Samson got out?

In his 7-ball stay, Sanju Samson failed to score any runs against a spinner. It was Akeal Hosein’s second ball when he was completely outfoxed. It was a shortish delivery and Akeal did enough that the ball turned wide a bit. However, as Sanju was predetermined to take him on, he came down the track way too early. As the ball spun a bit, Sanju missed it completely and Nicholas Pooran had no problem stumping him.

What’s next for Sanju?

There is no denying that Sanju Samson is hugely talented. But picture this, despite making his T20 debut back in 2015, Sanju has only played 19 T20Is for India. Selectors have always reasoned that he is an inconsistent and one-dimensional player.

However, the Kerala-born superstar has made changes to his game to become a more versatile batter than before. He has opened the innings, batted at No 3, No 4, No 5, and played as a finisher. He has improved his wicket-keeping skills. he has batted more responsibly to anchor the innings. But all of that is in IPL. With the limited amount of opportunities he has had for India, he has been great and bad at the same time.

When he has flourished in India colours, he has looked certain to keep his spot in all games. But it hasn’t quite worked out with a crowded middle order as well as selectors’ inability to look beyond Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul and others.

In ODIs, despite averaging well above 60, Sanju Samson is now fighting for a spot in Asia Cup 2023 and World Cup 2023. And even if he scores centuries in all innings, there is no guarantee that he will be picked ahead of Shreyas Iyer or KL Rahul. But, he will surely force the selectors to discuss his name.

However, with scores of 12 and 7 in two T20s, he is not doing that at the moment. And to put it bluntly, he is running out of time.
