IND vs AUS ODI: BCCI Selection Meeting – Shiv Sundar Das-led BCCI selection committee have decided against naming a replacement for Shreyas Iyer who has been ruled out of the ODI series against Australia. Iyer complained of lower back pain and was taken for scans after the third day’s play in Ahmedabad Test. As per scan reports, it is a recurrence of his back injury and he won’t be risked for the ODI series. The move meant that Sanju Samson, who averages 66 in the format, is snubbed again. The series starts on March 17 in Chennai. Follow India vs Australia LIVE Updates on InsideSport.IN
As per the Indian Express, the BCCI Selection Committee won’t name a replacement for the injured batter. The ODI squad will assemble in Mumbai on Tuesday. The 1st ODI is set for March 17 with Hardik Pandya set to lead. Rohit will join the team for a second ODI in Vishakapatnam.

Shreyas Iyer missed the SriLanka ODI series and the 1st Test against Australia due to the same back injury. However, after 15 days of rehab at the NCA, he was called straight back in for the 2nd Test in Delhi without any phased return. As a result, he has had a relapse of the injury and is now set to miss the ODI series against Australia. With WTC Final and World Cup, BCCI won’t take any risks with Iyer. Hence, his fate in IPL 2023 also hangs in balance.
In the last 6 months, Jasprit Bumrah and Deepak Chahar paid the price of a rushed return. Even Ravindra Jadeja’s return was delayed after the NCA tried to rush him to competitive cricket.
BCCI Statement on Shreyas Iyer:
“Shreyas Iyer complained of pain in his lower back following the third day’s play? He has gone for scans and the BCCI Medical Team is monitoring him,” BCCI said in a medical update.
Shreyas Iyer Injury Update:
- Iyer complained of back pain after Day 3’s play.
- Ravindra Jadeja came out to bat ahead of Iyer in Ahmedabad Test.
- He was immediately taken for scans and did not bat any further in the first innings.
- From the initial review, Iyer has a recurrence of his back injury that kept him out of the 1st Test.
- He will now head to NCA for further assessment and rehab.
- Hence, Iyer is now doubtful not only for the ODI series but also for the IPL.
- BCCI will take a call after NCA assesses his condition.
However, back injuries are tricky and the medical team never wants to risk a player. Hence, it is very much likely that Iyer will be unavailable for the ODI series. If the scan results indicate further problems, he will be a doubtful starter for IPL 2023, at least in the initial phase.
“It’s frustrating for sure. And it’s not the first time that a player has recurrence of an injury. We should have learned from Bumrah but we did not. Shreyas should have been eased into the team and not rushed to play grinding Test cricket. Hopefully, he will be fit for the ODI series. But it’s difficult to say anything at this point. He had scans and is currently under the medical team’s observation,” a senior BCCI official told InsideSport.
