After the infamous 2018 sandpaper gate in the Test match against South Africa, Cricket Australia was forced to make crucial changes. After all, it’s their national game. Big players like David Warner and Steve Smith were banned after the incident. The duo was also ripped off their captaincy and vice-captaincy status. Former World Cup captain Michael Clarke in a recent sports show came to Warner’s defence saying that the Australia Cricket board missed a trick in recognizing Warner’s leadership qualities. He commended his batting and leadership tactics.

In an interview to Big Sports Breakfast, Michael Clarke said that the swashbuckling batsman David Warner is a great asset for Australia. Apart from his dominance with the bat, he can also contribute with his on-field tactics. Clarke drew parallels between David Warner and two-time World Cup captain Ricky Ponting. The latter emerged as one of the best skippers to lead Aussies across Test and ODI formats.

The cricketer-turned-expert said that Pat Cummins could replace Tim Paine as skipper following Australia’s 2-1 loss in Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Paine was appointed Cricket Australia skipper in the longer format of the game as he had led New South Wales in 50 overs cricket. Aaron Finch took the leadership role in limited-overs after Paine failed to do well for Aussies in shorter versions of the game. Clarke believes that Smith can help the pacer in his stint as skipper. He is keen on Cummins taking the leadership role for Australia.

David Warner led the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) to glory in 2017 IPL season. He has retained his place for SRH in the upcoming 14th edition of the cash-rich league. As many as 42 cricketers have registered their names in IPL 2021 mini-auctions slated to take place in Chennai on February 18.
