After IPL Final fiasco, BCCI & ICC opt for new approach in World Cup tickets

Fans can begin registration for World Cup 2023 tickets from August 15 while sale of tickets will begin on Aug 25 and Aug 30 for India match tickets.

With 51 days to go for World Cup 2023, the two powerful cricket governing bodies will begin “registration” for tickets on Tuesday. It will be another 10 days when fans can start purchasing tickets. Amid the delay in releasing tickets and fans’ wrath, the International Cricket Council (ICC) and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) have opted for a new approach to sell World Cup 2023 tickets. The tickets will be sold in a staggered approach to avoid IPL final ticket fiasco as well as technical snags amid huge demand for India tickets.

In the first lot, fans will be able to purchase all tickets barring India matches from August 25. It will be only on August 30 when fans can begin booking tickets for India’s two warm-up matches in Guwahati and Thiruvananthapuram.

From August 31 to September 3, fans will be able to purchase India match tickets in a staggered approach.

“The staggered sale approach is designed to handle the expected surge in demand efficiently. It’s the most effective way to manage the system for the benefit of the fans,” an insider told Cricbuzz.

To note, during World Cup 2019, England & Wales Cricket Board (ECB) as well as ICC struggled to meet ticket demands for India games. The demand for tickets was so high that it crashed both websites. BCCI having learnt from IPL saga where it was a stampede-like situation due to physical tickets for the final, wants to avoid another fiasco.

But note, there won’t be any e-ticket for World Cup 2023. No matter where the fans are from, they have to buy tickets online. They will get physical tickets at home 72 hours before the match. Otherwise, they have to redeem the online ticket from stadium box offices.
