What is next for Cheteshwar Pujara? County Cricket stint at Sussex over, no chance at India Cricket Team, Domestic cricket next?

Cheteshwar Pujara’s County Cricket stint has finally ended. After having played for Sussex in the County Championship for 3 seasons, the club has finally relieved Pujara of his services. For the upcoming season, Sussex has roped in Daniel Hughes as Pujara’s replacement. Furthermore, the bowling attack has also been strengthened with the addition of West Indies pacer Jayden Seales.

With no county cricket for 2025 season, Pujara is likely to return to his country to continue playing domestic cricket. It is safe to say that for him the door for the Indian Cricket Team is ended. Despite performing well in Ranji Trophy last season, Pujara didn’t receive a call in the IND vs ENG Test series. Things turned worse when both KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer was injured, yet India decided to give chance to youngsters like Dhruv Jurel and Sarfaraz Khan.

No County Cricket for Pujara

“Taking over from Cheteshwar is not an easy task, but Dan has fitted in brilliantly and we are all delighted he will be back for the whole of next season,” Sussex head coach Paul Farbrace said in a statement on its official website.

“Dan has been top class for us on and off the field. He has brought a wealth of experience to the dressing room and has seriously helped some of our young batters with the development of their games,” Fabrace said.

As things stand, one of the options for Cheteshwar Pujara is to return to India and focus in domestic cricket. On the other hand, veteran Pujara can easily negotiate a fresh contract with other County Cricket clubs.

While Pujara might continue playing domestic cricket, but that won’t ease his way into the Indian Cricket Team. The doors for the National Team is closed as has been the case over the last year. The team is now focused on giving chance to youngsters.
