Chopra “not sure” about Gill becoming Test captain, feels “India running towards 3 captains in three formats”

Ex-Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra is certain that Gill would be the next ODI captain but is unsure if he would lead in Tests as well

Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra opined that he is not sure if Shubman Gill will be the future Indian captain for Tests. The Punjab batter is already deputy to Rohit Sharma in ODIs and is next in line to take over the reigns after the Hitman’s exit. However, he feels that going forward, India will be looking at three different captains for each format.

No India Test captaincy for Gill?

In a video on his YouTube channel, Chopra reckons that there is no doubt Gill would be the next ODI skipper. He opined that India will move forward with three separate captains for each format. He noted that Shubman has high chances of moving from number three to four in the batting order in the longest format of the game in the future.

There is no doubt he could be, if we talk only about ODI cricket. I am not sure about Test cricket. Firstly, I feel he won’t play at No. 3. He will go to No. 4. However, whether he will become the captain in the future, I have got no idea. I feel India are running fast towards three captains in the three formats,” Chopra said.

Further, Chopra backed Gill to be the next ODI captain after Rohit. Dubbing him as the best of all times, he said that he hopes the batter would go on to play over 200 ODIs for India and amass as many runs as possible. However, he noted that Suryakumar Yadav and Bumrah were in the reckoning at the moment for T20I and Test captaincy respectively.

One of the best of all times, he is that kind of a player. He is my captain for ODIs, no doubt. Suryakumar Yadav in T20Is and Jasprit Bumrah in Test cricket for now. Later, who knows. This is where we are heading actually,” Chopra added.

Meanwhile, reports have suggested that Gill could make his debut as ODI captain in the Champions Trophy clash against New Zealand on Sunday. If Rohit opts to sit out of the clash against Kiwis, in order to not aggravate his hamstring injury before the knockouts, then his deputy is bound to take charge.
