Indian batter Ruturaj Gaikwad was recently named as the skipper for the Indian contingent set to participate in the upcoming Asian Games to be held in Hangzhou, China from September 19. Ruturaj definitely has captaincy qualities: Coach Mohan Jadhav
To note, Gaikwad has earlier led Maharashtra U-19 and the senior team across all formats in domestic cricket. Previously, his name came up as ideal candidate to replace veteran MS Dhoni as the skipper of the Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League.
“Ruturaj definitely has captaincy qualities and that’s why he has been given such a big responsibility to lead the Indian team. I am confident he is capable of leading from the front,” Jadhav told mid-day.com from Pune on Saturday.
“He [Gaikwad] is a very calm cricketer, always maintains focus on his game and is able to take good decisions at the right time. He will do justice to this added responsibility,” Jadhav added. At present, Gaikwad is with the Indian team facing West Indies in a two-match Test series. The right-handed batter did not got a chance to make his Test debut in the first Test.
With Yashasvi Jaiswal stroking an excellent ton with in his first innings, it is very unlikely that the visitors will make changes to their playing. As a result, Gaikwad’s Test debut looks to be on hold for the moment. However, he will want to make a mark with the bat in the upcoming Asian Games and try to win the Gold Medal for India.
