Chetan Sharma Resigns: BCCI Selection Committee Meeting – Former India batsman Shiv Sundar Das will be the new interim chairman of the selection committee after Chetan Sharma resigned. Sharma who was in an embarrassing situation following a TV Sting operation sent his resignation letter to the BCCI Secretary Jay Shah. BCCI has also accepted the same. However, a senior BCCI official told InsideSport that he wasn’t forced to resign. Instead, the decision was his own. The selection meeting for the last two Tests of the Border Gavaskar Trophy will go on as scheduled. Follow IND vs AUS LIVE Updates on InsideSport.IN.

“No, he wasn’t forced to resign. We were setting up an internal committee to probe the situation. But Chetan sent in his resignation last night. Of course, it was an embarrassing situation. But it’s time to move on. SS Das is the next in line to be the chairman of the selection committee. He will take charge till the time a new selector comes in to replace Chetan,” a senior BCCI official told InsideSport.

BCCI Selection Committee:

  • Shiv Sundar Das (Tests: 23, ODIs: 4, T20s: 3)
  • Subroto Banerjee (Tests: 1, ODIs: 6, First Class: 59)
  • Salil Ankola (Tests: 1, ODIs: 20, First Class: 54)
  • Sridharan Sharath (First Class: 139, List A: 116)

What happens to the selection meeting? – The selection meeting for India Squad Australia series will go on as planned. The meeting was supposed to happen after the Ranji Trophy final. It will go on with Shiv Sundar Das heading the committee. BCCI will advertise for the 5th selector’s role in due course.

“Chetan’s resignation has come just yesterday. We will discuss the next course of action in due course. The selection meeting will go on as planned with the four other selectors. As for a replacement, we will discuss that with CAC and invite applications,” the official told InsideSport.

With Sharma’s resignation, the selection committee is once again down to four members. It was only last month that BCCI had got five selectors after a long gap of a year. But now the four-member selection committee will continue until BCCI appoints a replacement.

While the TV sting wasn’t very revealing, it had put the chief selector and the BCCI in an uncomfortable position with the players. InsideSport understands that some players including two captains Rohit Sharma and Hardik Pandya even refused to sit with him at the selection meeting.

In such a situation, it was almost untenable for Sharma to continue. He was in Kolkata for the Ranji Trophy Final along with the other four selectors. The entire committee was guarded by media officials. However, he did not attend Day 2 of the Ranji Final.
