Champions Trophy hero Shreyas Iyer reveals how “failures & rejections” shaped his confidence

Shreyas Iyer revealed how rejections and failures in life boosted his confidence and helped him put up a show in Champions Trophy

India cricket team batter Shreyas Iyer credited failures and rejections for boosting his confidence. The middle-order batter proved why he was the best number 4 batter in ODIs for the Men in Blue with his heroics in Champions Trophy. The Mumbai star finished as India’s leading run-getter in the tournament.

How Shreyas tackled failures

In an interview with Vimal Kumar, Shreyas outlined how he shaped all his innings in Champions Trophy, adding that he just went about his business, but not quietly. The middle-order batter had a turmultous 2024 where he even lost his BCCI central contract. He explained that he just walked out to the middle with the confidence to finish the job entrusted on him.

The confidence comes when you face rejections and failures in life. You get a good lesson from that. What you learn is that if there is anyone who can get you out of bad times, it is none other than you,” Iyer said.

Iyer’s redemption arc

In 2024, Iyer’s year started off on a bad note after he was excluded from BCCI central contracts list for skipping a domestic match. Despite leading KKR to their third title, he wsa left out of the T20 World Cup squad. That’s where his redemption arc began.

He participated in domestic tournaments consistently, including the Duleep Trophy, Ranji Trophy, SMAT and Vijay Hazare Trophy. Although he made a comeback to the ODI side in the series against Sri Lanka, he cemented his position at number 4 in Champions Trophy with his fireworks against England in Janury.

In CT 2025, Shreyas finished with 243 runs from 5 matches to his name, averaging 48.60. He scored two half-centuries in the tournament as well, playing a rescuing act on more than just one occasion. Now, Iyer will turn his attention towards IPL 2025, where he will be aiming to lead PBKS to their first-ever title.
