Champions Trophy 2025: Why is Shaheen Afridi has cut a hole in shoe?

With the India vs Pakistan Champions Trophy match currently gaining attention, what is truly grabbing headlines is Shaheen Afridi's hole in his shoe. But why is he wearing such a pair?

The India vs Pakistan Champions Trophy 2025 match is currently gaining massive attention as both teams are showing strong intent. On one hand, Pakistan posted an impressive total of 241 runs, and now India is doing well with the bat at Dubai International Stadium. However, what grabbed attention in the match was Pakistan’s lethal pacer Shaheen Afridi bowling with torn shoes.

That’s correct! Shaheen dismissed Rohit Sharma, but all eyes are on his shoes right now. Why is this premium bowler wearing torn shoes? Well, this is surely not new, as we have seen similar instances in the past where many bowlers have bowled with holes in their shoes. See in detail why, but? happens.

Why do bowlers wear torn shoes?

The reason is simple, bowlers, especially fast bowlers, sometimes wear torn shoes to prevent injuries. By making slight modifications, they can reduce the risk of injuries caused by the immense pressure on their front foot during the delivery stride. The force exerted can cause the foot to slide forward inside the shoe, leading to bruised toenails or other injuries. To alleviate this issue, many bowlers cut holes—just like Afridi did—or make adjustments to their shoes, allowing more room for their toes and reducing discomfort.

Not only Afridi but former Pakistan pacer Shoaib Akhtar also followed this practice during his playing days. Even South Africa’s Kagiso Rabada and England’s Tymal Mills have been known to modify their shoes for enhanced comfort and injury prevention while bowling.

Footballers as well!

Well, in football as well, although not exactly torn shoes, many players modify their boots. The best example is Cristiano Ronaldo, who has been known to customize his boots for optimal performance. Similarly, England’s Wayne Rooney and the great Lionel Messi often have their boots tailored to fit their playing style, which may include modifications for comfort.
