Shreyas Iyer ended his long wait for a first-class hundred as he sizzled with the bat in the Mumbai vs Maharashtra clash in Ranji Trophy. The Mumbai batter has made his return to red-ball cricket in the domestic circuit in an attempt to earn his way back to India’s Test side. Iyer revealed that he was absolutely keen to return to donning the white jersey again, adding that it was one of the main reasons why he was playing the Ranji Trophy.
Shreyas Iyer determined to make Test comeback
As per Times of India, Shreyas Iyer stated that he was focusing on “controlling the controabbles” and keeping his body in shape. The swashbucling middle-order batter is currently out of the favour of selectors and last featured in a Test earlier this year in the IND vs ENG series. Since then, it hasn’t been quite a good ride for Iyer who was first dropped from the BCCI’s Central Contracts list and then was excluded from the squad for the T20 World Cup.
“Absolutely! That’s why I’ve been playing. I mean, or else I would have given a reason and sat out. I am absolutely keen for a comeback but yes, as we say, control the controllables, and my job is to keep performing and keep participating (in matches) as much as possible and also see that my body is in the best shape. So, I’ll take the best decision possible according to that,” Shreyas Iyer said.

Iyer’s century against Maharashtra is his first since 2021 and he feels quite special about it. He admitted that he was feeling low becuase of his history with injuries but felt a boost in his confidence after the ton.
Walking in at number five after the wicket of an opener, Iyer joined young batsman Ayush Mhatre. The pair built a formidable partnership, crossing the 200-run mark on day two and driving Mumbai past the 300 mark. Iyer scored his century in 131 balls, with the help of nine fours and three sixes.
Shreyas Iyer’s struggles in domestic season 2024-25
Iyer had a poor start to the domestic season, beginning with the Dilip Trophy, where he could only score two half-centuries in six innings. Later, while playing for Mumbai, he managed to score a half-century in the Ranji Cup but had a disappointing performance against Baroda, getting out for a duck in the first innings and scoring only 30 runs in the second innings.
