Virat Kohli was seen animated against the Australian media and was involved in a tense exchange with the media at Melbourne Airport ahead of the highly anticipated Boxing Day BGT Test at the MCG. The confrontation erupted when cameras turned to Kohli’s family, invading their privacy in a public space. The 36-year-old, vividly annoyed with the photographers and media persons, took exception to the intrusion, demanding that reporters respect his family’s privacy.
Virat Kohli stands for his privacy vs Aussie media
The confrontation reportedly began when media members, initially speaking to Australian bowler Scott Boland, noticed Kohli and his family. The reporters then approached the Indian cricketer, who, visibly upset, confronted a Channel 9 reporter. Kohli, expressing his frustration, stated, “With my kids, I need some privacy; you can’t film without asking me.” He then walked away but turned back to continue voicing his concerns to particular media persons. “If I’m alone, it’s OK. Did you ask?,” said Kohli while confronting to the media.
Throughout his career, Kohli has consistently emphasised his desire to keep his family out of the public eye. When his daughter, Vamika, was born in 2021, Kohli and Anushka Sharma made it clear for all the media persons to maintain some privacy for the family. Earlier this year, in February, Kohli was blessed with a baby boy, Akaay. Hence, it is obvious that Kohli would mind his newborn being filmed.
Off the field, Kohli has faced challenges with his performance during India’s ongoing tour of Australia. Apart from a century at Optus Stadium, his recent scores have been underwhelming. Across 5 innings, Kohli has made just 126 runs at an average of 31.50. Mind you, 100 of these runs came in just one innings. The BGT series is currently hanging at 1-1, with two games remaining. The entire team has landed in Melbourne ahead of the Boxing Day Test, starting from December 26.
