Can unpredictability be Pakistan’s secret weapon at T20 World Cup? Javed Miandad explains

Both Miandad and Azam are banking on a turnaround in the World Cup. While recent losses have dampened spirits, Pakistan's unpredictability could prove to be a surprise weapon.

Just days before the T20 World Cup kicks off, Pakistan cricket team finds itself in a state of uncertainty. Recent bilateral series against Ireland and England haven’t yielded ideal results, leaving questions about their best playing combination.

T20 World Cup

Struggles and setbacks for Pakistan

Openers Saim Ayub and Mohammad Rizwan haven’t clicked consistently, while wicketkeeper-batsman Azam Khan’s performance with both bat and gloves has been underwhelming. The much-anticipated return of Mohammad Amir also hasn’t lived up to the hype.

Babar Azam captaincy under scrutiny

Since taking over the T20 captaincy from Shaheen Afridi, Babar Azam‘s leadership has faced scrutiny. Pakistan fell short against New Zealand’s second string at home, lost to England, and barely scraped through against Ireland. Their plans seem to be faltering.

Unpredictability: A Double-Edged Sword

However, legendary Pakistani batsman Javed Miandad sees a glimmer of hope in this very uncertainty. “They are unpredictable and always seem to do well in these T20 World Cups. But yes, they need to definitely improve in some areas quickly because, with a 20-team event, you can’t afford to relax even in one game,” he said on Star Sports, highlighting Pakistan’s history of thriving in major tournaments.

Miandad acknowledges the need for improvement but believes their unpredictability could be an advantage. Pakistan fans, however, are not as optimistic.

Fan frustration with Azam Khan

Many fans are unhappy with Azam Khan’s performance, particularly his dropped catches in the last game against England. Doubts about his fitness have also emerged, leading to questions about his selection as the World Cup wicketkeeper.

Babar backs his team

Despite the criticism, Captain Babar Azam remains confident in his team’s abilities. “We have capable and talented players, and we will come good in the World Cup,” he declared after the England series defeat.

Hope springs eternal

Both Miandad and Azam are banking on a turnaround in the World Cup. While recent losses have dampened spirits, Pakistan’s unpredictability could prove to be a surprise weapon. Their journey begins with their opening match against the USA. Can they overcome their inconsistencies and lift the trophy? Only time will tell.
