Can Shami shoulder India’s Champions Trophy expectations in Bumrah’s absence? Mhambrey weighs in

Paras Mhambrey said that Shami has a lot of expectations to shoulder at the Champions Trophy in the absence of Bumrah

Former India bowling coach Paras Mhambrey explained that there was a lot on Mohammed Shami’s shoulders heading into Champions Trophy. The veteran pacer will spearhead the pace attack in the absence of Jasprit Bumrah. However, Shami hasn’t looked like he is back to bowling in the same lethal manner in which he used to do so before his injury.

“Lot on Shami’s shouders”

Speaking to Hindustan Times, Mhambrey said that Shami was the most experienced bowler in India’s pace unit at Champions Trophy. While he is delighted with the pacer’s return from injury after being on the sidelines for 14 months, he noted that India will be relying heavily on him.

Shami is the most experienced of the bowlers right now and knowing him, I am sure he recognises that there is a lot on his shoulders. I am happy that he has come out of the injury, he is a guy with great skill sets. What he has done for Indian cricket is fabulous, He had great ODIs (vs England), he will grow from here,” Mhambrey said.

When asked about Shami returning to his old form, Mhambrey said that it was too early to comment on that. He noted that the pacer had just made a comeback after a long layoff and that it could take time.

I don’t know, it is too early to say, he might do it, he might not do it… but he is a bowler coming from an injury, such a big layoff it will take time. A huge positive for me is that he is playing, that is good to see,” he added.
