Bumrah unlikely for India vs England ODIs; Rohit-Kohli, Hardik Pandya & Shreyas Iyer to feature

The ODI series against England kicks off on February 6, just 13 days before the ICC Champions Trophy kicks off in Pakistan (February 19)

A week ago, InsideSport had reported that Jasprit Bumrah would be rested for the India vs England T20I series. However, until then, the pacer hadn’t suffered from back spasms. Taking this into effect, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has decided to rest Bumrah for the India vs England ODI series as well.

Jasprit Bumrah to be rested for India vs England ODIs

According to the Times of India, to ensure that Bumrah is fit for the ICC Champions Trophy; the BCCI will rest the unorthodox pacer from the only lead-up tournament that the India cricket team will play before the 8-team tournament.

“Jasprit has had a long tour. He needs rest before the important Champions Trophy. He will also play the IPL immediately after the Champions Trophy before the England series. So, we need to treat him carefully. T20Is are not in focus at the moment. So, the workload management plan will come into effect,” a senior BCCI official had told InsideSport last week.

Team India’s squads for ICC Champions Trophy & England ODIs

Coming to the squad, InsideSport understands that the BCCI would announce the squad for the England white-ball series and the ICC Champions Trophy together. We had previously informed you that by January 12, all nations will have to name their squad for the tournament taking place in Pakistan and the UAE. Teams will be allowed to make changes to their squad until February 13.

“The initial squad submission deadlines at our tournaments are 30 days (January 12) before the support periods start. The support periods start one week before the tournaments,” the ICC had previously informed InsideSport.

Rohit Sharma-Virat Kohli to play

This suggests by Sunday, we’ll have full clarity on the squad, i.e., who feature sand who doesn’t. It’s expected that Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli would both feature. The senior pros had a bad Border-Gavaskar Trophy and need to return to form before the ICC Champions Trophy. The 50-over setup would continue to see Shreyas Iyer and Hardik Pandya in action as well.

Shami fit for India vs England ODIs?

Shreyas has been in splendid touch in the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2024-25, while Hardik has featured in just three of Baroda’s six matches. Another player in focus would be Mohammed Shami. The pacer has returned to action, but his fitness is yet to be assessed for the grind that international cricket is.
