BPL 2022: ILT20 & BBL Live Updates: The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) will face a stern challenge in the coming months to keep the relevance of Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) intact. With the launch of new T20 leagues in South Africa and UAE, and the already scheduled Big Bash League (BBL) has meant that BPL is struggling to sign overseas players. Most of the top foreign players have already opted for big money contracts in CSA T20 League and ILT20 league and BBL 2022, leaving the BPL in limbo. BPL to lose it’s Relevance?

Until the last edition, global cricketing stars like Faf du Plessis, Chris Gayle, Sunil Narine all played in the BPL. But this time, all of them have different commitments. Most of the West Indies stars have signed up for ILT20 League in UAE while South Africa stars will play in CSA T20 League.

Big players like  Dwayne Bravo and Andre Fletcher,  who are the second-highest wicket-taker and the second-highest run-getter in the last edition of the BPL will not take part in the upcoming season. Andre Russell, who played for Minister Group Dhaka, is also on the ILT20’s list of signings, while Mujeeb Ur Rahman, who represented Fortune Barishal, will be playing in South Africa.

The BPL 2022 will have huge issues in maintaining its relevance as the deadline approaches. The BCB has set August 31 as the deadline for potential franchise owners’ “expression of Interest” (EOI). The BCB hopes that most of the previous franchise owners would return, with the BPL providing three-year contracts for them. Earlier, the franchise contracts were for just a year.

With players preferring lucrative deals and attraction of big-money owner, BPL faces a sizable job to keep its relevance.

Big Owners to attract big names

However, this time, it will be a problem. With IPL franchises joining the overseas T20 leagues bandwagon, they have attracted big names. The BPL does not have big owners. It will also face a stern challenge from BBL for Australian players. It is scheduled to start on December 13 and run till February 4. BBL has named 170 cricketers already, including Rashid Khan, Alex Hales, du Plessis, Rilee Rossouw and Bravo in the draft. But the ILT20 has been the most proactive with its signings. The South African league hasn’t been too far behind either.

The newly formed South Africa T20 league and ILT20 are set to be launched in January next year. The Big Bash League (BBL) is also another league that will have a major say during the period as historically they have the window for their T20 competition. But the presence of Indian Premier League (IPL) team owners in the league makes the South T20 League and ILT20 league a major attraction. At the current moment, all six franchises in the South Africa league are owned by Indian owners

Huge tax for BPL players & No Nightlife

Another big barrier for the BPL is the high taxation rate in the country despite the players getting hefty payments. Because of the laws of the land in Bangladesh, the players end up paying higher taxes than they do elsewhere. Also due to strict law policies, there are no night entertainment options for players coming from overseas. This has again led to discomfort for the players.

As things stand, BPL will have to provide other amenities to the players as they are well-traveled and live a luxurious lifestyle. In comparison, overseas players in UAE and South Africa will enjoy a particular piece of party lifestyle. Previously the IPL in 2009 had official night parties to get the stardom when it was held in South Africa.
