Mohammed Shami will be a big miss by Gujarat Titans in IPL 2024. But he will be a bigger miss for the Indian Cricket Team, especially in the upcoming T20 World Cup. The highest wicket taker in the ODI World Cup won’t be a part of the team for T20 World Cup. The ace pacer has gone under the knife for his ankle injury and will take some time for his recovery.
Shami hasn’t been in action post the ODI World Cup. And now his return has been further delayed. Currently in UK, Shami was receiving treatment for his swollen ankle. But with nothing doing, he has undergone surgery and is expected to be out of action for a long time.
Shami will naturally miss IPL. He will also miss the T20 World Cup followed by the series against Bangladesh and New Zealand. India is on their hunt for an ICC Trophy. Thus, it is imperative that India fields their full strength in the T20 World Cup.
Shami took to social media to post that he had undergone a successful surgery. He wrote, “Just had a successful heel operation on my achilles tendon! 👟 Recovery is going to take some time, but looking forward to getting back on my feet.”
Team India to Miss key players for T20 World Cup
India came close to lifting the ODI World Cup, but ended by being runners up to Australia. Shami’s absence will be hard to fill. It is expected that Bumrah and Siraj will lead the pace charge. But, the addition of Shami would have been perfect in India’s trident pace attack.
As for the Men in Blue, apart from Shami, it is expected that Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer too will miss the T20 World Cup. The duo are likely to not get BCCI Central contracts for 2023-24.
