Big Blow to RR! Not Andrew Flintoff, Kumar Sangakkara in place to become England head coach

Back in January 2021, Kumar Sangakkara joined Rajasthan Royals as Director of Cricket and has been part of the franchise since then.

The cricketing world is abuzz with the news of former Sri Lankan captain Kumar Sangakkara emerging as a strong contender for the England white-ball head coach position. This development has sent ripples through the inaugural IPL champions, Rajasthan Royals (RR).

England White-Ball woes

England’s cricket team has been experiencing a stark contrast in fortunes across different formats. While the Test team has soared under the inspirational leadership of Brendon McCullum, the white-ball side has struggled to replicate similar success. Seventh place finish at ODI World Cup 2023 in India, semi-final lost at the recent T20 World Cup 2024. Consequently, the position of head coach, currently held by Matthew Mott, has come under massive scrutiny.

Kumar Sangakkara now in frontline

Enter Kumar Sangakkara. The legendary Sri Lankan batter, known for his elegant strokeplay and astute cricketing mind, has already made a significant impact as the Director of Cricket for the Rajasthan Royals (RR). His tenure has seen the team reach the IPL final in 2022, showcasing his ability to build a winning team.

Loss for Rajasthan Royals

He has immensely backed local Indian talents, with Riyan Parag being the biggest example. The likes of Yashasvi Jaiswal, Kuldeep Sen, Dhruv Jurel and Sandeep Sharma have all become integral part of the franchise.

A crucial factor in this potential move is the existing synergy between Sangakkara and England’s white-ball captain, Jos Buttler. Both have enjoyed a successful partnership at the Rajasthan Royals, with Buttler flourishing under Sangakkara’s guidance. This pre-established rapport could be a game-changer for the English team.

Sangakkara’s potential departure would undeniably be a setback for the RR. Losing a coach of his caliber could disrupt the team’s momentum and impact their performance in future IPL seasons.

Not Andrew Flintoff

Legendary English all-rounder Andrew Flintoff was highly deemed as a clear cut candidate to replace Matthew Mott. However, with Kumar Sangakkara now in line, it is now a two-way race.
