Australia Test stars eyed for BBL 14
While Australia’s Test squad will be unavailable for the BBL finals due to their upcoming tour of Sri Lanka, there’s optimism that several key players could make appearances during the regular season. The window between the end of the five-match Test series against India on January 7 and the start of the Sri Lanka tour presents a potential opportunity for Test stars to showcase their skills in the BBL.
However, BBL head Alistair Dobson acknowledges the grueling nature of the India series and the priority placed on Test cricket. “We’ve given ourselves every shot,” he said. “That said, a five-Test Border-Gavaskar Trophy series is probably the toughest Test series our players will play in and that’s where their focus is.”
BBL schedule for Maximum Impact
The BBL schedule has been designed to maximize viewership and player availability. The season kicks off on December 15 (second day of Brisbane Test), with the final scheduled for January 27. This arrangement allows for a potential influx of Test players towards the end of the regular season.
Last season, several Test players made brief appearances in the BBL, including Steven Smith, Usman Khawaja, and Marnus Labuschagne. While their participation is not guaranteed this year, their potential involvement would undoubtedly add excitement to the competition.

The upcoming overseas player draft, scheduled for early September, will also play a crucial role in shaping the BBL landscape. Clubs now have the option to sign players on multi-year deals before the draft, adding a new dynamic to player recruitment.

Perth Scorchers to launch BBL season
The 2024-25 Big Bash League will kick off with a blockbuster match between the Perth Scorchers and Melbourne Stars at Optus Stadium. The league is scheduled to have matches on almost every night, with only Christmas Eve and Christmas Day free of cricket action. This year’s schedule benefits from the timing of the India Test series, as the Perth and Adelaide Tests will be broadcast prime-time in the eastern states, setting the stage for the BBL to dominate evening television slots once it starts.
Adelaide Oval will host its traditional New Year’s Eve clash, this time featuring the Strikers against the Scorchers, while other key fixtures include a Boxing Day doubleheader and New Year’s Day matches. Meanwhile, the Renegades will return to Geelong’s GMHBA Stadium for their first home game after last season’s abandoned match due to a dangerous pitch.
