Steve Smith requested CA to allow him to play in the Big Bash League Final between Sydney Sixers and Perth Scorchers after the New Zealand series was postponed due to Covid restrictions. But his request was denied after other CEOs objected to his return.

As per reports, Steve Smith had travelled to Melbourne to meet his domestic teammates as he believed that his paperwork and application would be approved. However, he was left puzzled on learning that the application by Sydney Sixers had been rejected by Cricket Australia. The Sixers cleverly kept a spot in their list open hoping that an International superstar player would be available.
It is understood that the state CEOs suggested Cricket Australia stick to their rules and not change them to allow a particular player to play.
The rule states that if a team wants to replace its players then the replacement players should only be allotted from the player replacement pool. This special pool was created this month as a means of precaution with the rising number of Covid cases.

If Smith had been nominated by the Sydney giants then he had to enter the pool where he could have been picked by any other club. However, since the Sydney Sixers were unaware that the ODI series would get postponed they failed to nominate their star player in the player replacement pool.
It is understood that both Smith and the Sixers are hugely disappointed with the unprecedented event. Upon winning on Saturday, the Sydney Sixers will take part in the finals of the BBL at the iconic Sydney Cricket Ground.
