The former India captain was forced out of BCCI despite wanting to continue as BCCI President for 3 more years. While Treasurer Arun Dhumal cited different reasons, Ganguly’s first innings at the BCCI ended abruptly after N Srinivasan criticised his non-performance. As the BCCI honchos were against backing him for the ICC Chairman elections, it became clear that Ganguly will have to be in exile from the BCCI.
“I was a cricketer’s administrator. Many good things happened like IPL during Covid, IPL broadcast rights, U19 team winning the World Cup, Women’s team winning silver medal, India winning in Australia. So I enjoyed my time as the president,” Ganguly said at an event in Kolkata.
BCCI Elections Live: Why Sreenivasan was against Ganguly?
- The discomfort between the two dates back to 2019.
- Srinivasan had almost put Brijesh Patel in the chair but the tables turned at the last minute when Ganguly was announced as the president.
- Though he has never spoken about it in public, sources said Srinivasan never forgot this embarrassment and wanted to set it right.
- For Srinivasan, it was a matter of prestige. He had to prove that his word still counts.
- The official reason cited to Sourav is that no president has held office for two consecutive terms.
- There was no reason the East’s candidate could enjoy this privilege.
- It was learnt that Srinivasan had gone to the extent of accusing Sourav of failing to live up to expectations.

Later, Arun Dhumal said nobody had any ill feelings about Ganguly. And the decision to drop him as the candidate was purely based on past instances. No BCCI president has completed two terms.
Speaking to PTI, Dhumal said Ganguly was party to all the decisions made before the nominations were filed. “There has been no BCCI president who has served for more than three years in independent India. All this media speculation about Dada being told or a few members were against him, they are all baseless,” Dhumal said.
“Nobody spoke a word against him. All the Board members were extremely happy and satisfied with the entire team and how BCCI was run in the last three years despite the challenges posed by COVID-19.
“Dada has had a very distinguished career as an India captain, one of the best-ever leaders. As an administrator he took the entire team along and we worked as one team,” he added.
As for the changes in the board, Jay Shah will retain his position as the BCCI Secretary. At a BCCI meeting held at the Trident Hotel in Mumbai on Tuesday, all office bearers from different parts of the country from various associations filed nominations for different positions on the board. The discussions were held in the internal BCCI meeting in the lead-up to the elections, scheduled for October 18.
