The IND vs ENG 2nd Test turned out to be a closely contested affair, with India winning the match to level the 5-match series 1-1. England needed to score 399 runs in the fourth innings to win, but fell 106 runs short. England opener Zak Crawley was the highest scorer of the team in the fourth innings, scoring 73 runs. However, his LBW dismissal off the bowling of Kuldeep Yadav threw up a controversy. Ben Stokes wasn’t happy with the dismissal, and former South African captain AB De Villiers on Wednesday said Stokes was right to feel disappointed.
On Day 4 of the IND vs ENG 2nd Test, Crawley, who was playing confidently at 73, returned to the pavillion after a controversial call. The ball struck him on the legs, and although the on-field umpire initially gave it not out, India’s decision to review led to an overturning of the call based on the ball-tracking technology, which indicated that the ball would hit the leg stump.
After the match, Stokes said the technology had erred in judgement with the call. De Villiers, speaking on his YouTube channel, backed Stokes’ claim.
“I am looking at it now and I feel it is not hitting the leg stump (Crawley LBW). It might just clip or touch the outer part of the leg-stump, which ultimately would be umpire’s call. Technology has made decisions more accurate, but they need to make sure that the cameras are right in line with the middle stump at both ends and not at an angle. Ben Stokes was a little bit upset and rightfully so,” De Villiers said.
