Like the ODI World Cup, the BCCI selection committee will shortlist 25-30 players for the T20 World Cup 2024. All the players will be monitored throughout IPL 2024 without putting up any conditions for the franchises. Among them, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma will also be the ones. Chief selector Ajit Agarkrar will travel to Cape Town to speak to Rahul Dravid in that regard.
In the last IPL, there was an idea that BCCI would issue a diktat asking franchises to limit matches for shortlisted players. However, that idea has now been dropped. Instead, the selectors will make a bigger pool of players in case of injuries.
All the players in the shortlist will be monitored by the National Cricket Academy physios and the BCCI medical team. The NCA will follow up with the franchises on their workload during IPL 2024.
“The BCCI can never tell a franchise to manage a star player’s workload unless it’s a case of injury management,” PTI quoted a BCCI source as saying.
As has been the case in the past, BCCI selectors will make a bigger pool with at least two players each for every position. In case of injuries, the alternate player can be called in as a like-for-like replacement. However, there will be no replacements for Hardik Pandya who is currently recovering from an ankle injury.
