BCCI to meet with IPL team owners next week regarding IPL 2025 Mega Auction: Report

With the IPL mega auction on the horizon, the BCCI and franchises are set to engage in crucial discussions that will shape the future of the league.

The upcoming IPL 2025 mega auction is sparking discussions about player retention policies. The BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) is reportedly seeking input from IPL franchises on potentially increasing the number of players each team can retain before the auction.

BCCI meeting with IPL Franchise Owners

According to TOI sources, the BCCI has invited all 10 IPL franchise owners to a meeting in Ahmedabad next week. Here, player retention is expected to be a major topic of conversation.

Notably, the same publication earlier reported that there will be no meeting on April 16 in Ahmedabad.

IPL teams push for more retentions

Many franchises reportedly favor allowing them to retain around eight players prior to the auction. This is a significant increase from the current system, which permits four retentions with the option to buy back one additional player using the “Right to Match” card.

The current policy allows teams to retain a maximum of five players, with a limit of two overseas players.

Continuity and Salary Cap Increase

Franchise representatives believe a higher retention allowance would foster greater team continuity. Additionally, some teams have expressed a desire for an increased salary cap, citing the BCCI’s recent acquisition of lucrative media rights deals. The current salary cap sits at Rs 90 crore, and some franchises would like to see it raised to Rs 100 crore.

Potential Objections and Repercussions

While a majority might favor more retentions, there are likely to be dissenting voices. Some franchises struggling to rebuild after the last mega auction, such as the Delhi Capitals and Royal Challengers Bengaluru, may prefer a larger player pool for the auction. An increased retention allowance could also limit the talent available in the auction, potentially impacting weaker teams.

Key Issues for Discussion at IPL 2025 Mega Auction Meeting

The upcoming meeting is expected to address these concerns and explore various options for player retention, auction procedures, and the salary cap. These decisions will have a significant impact on the future of the IPL.
