In a surprising turn of events, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will reportedly consider appointing both Gautam Gambhir and WV Raman to key coaching roles in the Indian men’s cricket team. This potential strategy aims to leverage the strengths and experiences of both former cricketers.
Gautam Gambhir vs WV Raman
Until recently, Gautam Gambhir was seen as the clear favourite to replace Rahul Dravid as the head coach of the Indian team. Reports suggested that the BCCI had already reached an agreement with Gambhir, with an official announcement expected after the 2024 T20 World Cup.
However, the emergence of WV Raman as a strong candidate has introduced new dynamics into the selection process.
WV Raman resume
WV Raman, who has played 28 international matches, brings extensive coaching experience. His coaching career spans domestic teams like Tamil Nadu and Bengal, and roles in the IPL with the Punjab franchise and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).
He also served as the head coach of the Indian women’s cricket team from 2018 to 2021. Notably, Gambhir sought Raman’s assistance in 2013 to regain form, and they later worked together at KKR when the team won the IPL title in 2014.
Dual coaching strategy
According to a report by News18, the BCCI is exploring the possibility of utilising both Gambhir and Raman in complementary coaching roles.
A source familiar with the developments suggested several ways this could be achieved: “The Indian cricket board must look at utilising the services of both Raman and Gambhir. There are numerous ways in which one can do that – say have Gambhir as head coach and Raman as batting coach or allow Raman to have more say in red ball. Both can benefit Indian cricket and that’s what one should look at.”

CAC dilemma
The Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC), comprising Ashok Malhotra, Jatin Paranjape, and Sulakshana Naik, faces a challenging decision. While Gambhir’s leadership in IPL and recent mentoring roles highlight his tactical acumen, Raman’s extensive coaching background and successful stints at various levels make him a formidable contender.

Future Prospects
As the CAC deliberates, it remains uncertain whether an overseas candidate will be considered. For now, the focus is on the two Indian contenders. This innovative approach of potentially integrating both Gambhir and Raman could mark a new era in Indian cricket coaching, combining fresh leadership with deep-rooted coaching expertise.
