BCCI splash BIG Bucks on Ajit Agarkar; salary tripled for chief selector post

A formal decision on remuneration of Ajit Agarkar's salary for Chief selector's post will be taken at Apex Council meeting on Friday.

Ajit Agarkar: On the expected lines, The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) have splashed big bucks on Ajit Agarkar for the chief selector post. BCCI appointed the former India pacer for the pivotal role on Tuesday (July 4) with the promise of increasing the salary. Chetan Sharma, Agarkar’s predecessor, got one lakh, and the rest of the other members got 90 lakhs.

However, with Agarkar getting over one crore as the assistant coach for Delhi Capitals, he wanted a raise in salary. While the amount is not confirmed reports suggest that Agarkar will get triple the salary for the chief selector post.

Ajit Agarkar: Formal decision to hike selectors’ remuneration to be taken at Board’s Apex Council meeting on Friday

Agarkar decided to apply for the chief selector’s post only when he was guaranteed pf a hike in salary. Interestingly, the former India pacer also applied for the post in 2020, but BCCI did not pick him. A formal decision to hike selectors’ remuneration will be taken during the Apex Council meeting on Friday.

Apart from salary hike, BCCI also ditched age-old criteria to appoint Agarkar as the chief. The former India pacer from West Zone will lead a panel that includes Subroto Banerjee (Central Zone), S Sharath (South Zone), SS Das (East Zone), and Salil Ankola (West Zone).

There will be two selectors from West Zone. Since no high-profile names applied from North Zone, BCCI had to appoint two selectors from the same zone. However, there is no such rule related to selectors’ appointment on zonal basis

To apply for the post of selector, a candidate should have played a minimum of seven Test matches or 30 First Class, 10 ODI matches, and 20 First-Class matches. He/she should have also retired from the game at least five years earlier. Also, no person who has been a member of any cricket Committee (as defined in the Memorandum of Association and Rules and Regulations of BCCI) for a period of five years shall be eligible to be a member of the Men’s selection committee.

The other members of the senior selection committee are Subroto Banerjee, Salil Ankola, Sridharan Sharath, and Shiv Sundar Das, who were filling as interim chairperson after Chetan Sharma stepped down from Chief selector’s role. Agarkar & Co’s first task will be to select the T20I team for the West Indies tour.
