The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has no plans to host the upcoming Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 in India. Originally scheduled to be played in Bangladesh, the ICC event currently lies in limbo. Due to the civil unrest in the nation, several nations have issued advisories over traveling to Bangladesh, and it doesn’t seem likely that it will be held according to the ICC’s initial plan.
No thank you says BCCI
Reports had come out that India could very well emerge as the hosts for the Women’s T20 World Cup, stepping in Bangladesh. However, BCCI Secretary Jay Shah has outrightly refused. Having hosted the men’s ODI World Cup last year and set to host the women’s ODI World Cup next year, Shah has bluntly turned down the ICC’s request to host yet another World Cup in India.
“They (ICC) had asked the BCCI if they can host the event, but I flatly refused. We would be still in the monsoon season and next year, we are going to host the ODI Women’s World Cup (2025). I do not want to give the impression that I want to host consecutive World Cups,” Jay Shah said in an interview with the Times of India.

ICC to approach SLC next?
Now that the BCCI has shut the door on them, the ICC might turn to Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC). They’ve just hosted an 8-team tournament, the Women’s Asia Cup, in July rather successfully, and we even saw some good crowds in the knockout stages. The Women’s T20 World Cup will have just two more teams, and the number of matches will be increased by just 8, from 15 in the Asia Cup to 23 in the T20 World Cup.
