BCCI set clear demands from new coach: Handling ‘marquee players’ pressure and fan connect among key traits

With applications now open, the cricketing world eagerly awaits the announcement of the new head coach who will lead India into the next chapter.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is on the hunt for a new head coach for the Indian men’s cricket team. Applications for the coveted position opened on Monday, with the successful candidate expected to take the reins in July 2024.

Building winning legacy: BCCI vision

The ideal candidate will be tasked with shaping a “world-class Indian cricket team” capable of consistent success across formats and conditions. The BCCI emphasizes the importance of inspiring not just current players, but also future generations with their approach to the game.

The successful candidate will be responsible for developing a world class Indian cricket team which delivers sustained success in all conditions and formats, inspiring current and future generations of cricketers and stakeholders with their approach to the game,” BCCI in release said.

Leading star performers: Crucial skill

The ability to handle the immense pressure associated with managing marquee players is another key quality the BCCI seeks in the new coach. India boasts some of the biggest names in world cricket, and the coach must be able to effectively guide and motivate them.

“To build a structure in place that ensures that all players are developed as cricketers and individuals. The successful candidate will need to provide confidence that they can develop and improve the existing talent technically and tactically, whilst identifying and integrating new talent into a team culture that is both challenging and supportive.”

“Must be willing to meet work expectations and pressures associated with handling marquee athletes.”

Building bridges with fans

The statement also highlights the importance of fostering a positive relationship with fans. The new coach will be expected to not just lead on the field, but also connect with the passionate Indian cricket fanbase.

Aside fans, the BCCI also mentioned other external shareholders like media, national teams, and broadcasters.

Open door for Rahul Dravid

Current head coach Rahul Dravid‘s contract expires after the upcoming T20 World Cup in June. The BCCI has confirmed that Dravid can re-apply for the position if he desires. The application deadline is May 27th, 2024, a day after the IPL final.

Rahul Dravid Tenure: Mixed Bag

Rahul Dravid took charge in November 2021 after India’s T20 World Cup exit that year. While India reached the finals of both the T20 World Cup 2023 and the 2023 ODI World Cup under his leadership, they haven’t been able to break the ICC trophy drought that stretches back to the 2013 Champions Trophy win.
