BCCI Secretary Jay Shah extended congratulations to Team India on the 40th anniversary of their historic victory in the inaugural Asia Cup. The memorable triumph occurred on April 13, 1984, when India secured a 54-run win over arch-rivals Pakistan in Sharjah, clinching the championship title in a fiercely contested tournament conducted in a round-robin league format.
The inaugural Asia Cup featured India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka, marking the first international tournament held at the iconic venue of Sharjah.
Shah commemorated the occasion, stating, “On this day in 1984, Team India claimed victory in the inaugural Asia Cup, led by Surinder Khanna’s remarkable 56 runs against Pakistan. The stellar performances of Ravi Shastri’s left-arm spin and Roger Binny’s precise seam bowling further bolstered Team India’s triumph, with both emerging as joint-highest wicket-takers in the tournament.”
