BCCI president’s Sourav Ganguly political innings a “non-starter”: Putting to rest speculation that he might join politics soon, Sourav Ganguly has given enough indications to suggest that he will stay away from joining politics in the near future.

In a conversation with his longtime close friend and CPI(M) leader Ashok Bhattacharya, Ganguly has given a clear indication that he will stay away from joining any political party anytime soon.

“Ganguly told me that he is not interested in joining politics. I called him to know what he thought of this issue and whether he was joining politics. I have no idea whether he will finally join one day or not but all I can say is that he is a reluctant person as far as politics is concerned and wants to remain a sportsperson and sports administrator,” CPI(M) leader Ashok Bhattacharya who is close to Ganguly, told Inside Sport over the phone on Friday.

Ganguly has evaded the question again and again when this reporter had tried to talk to him on this issue for the last two months and had come out with an one liner: “Sobai shob kichur jonno hoy na” meaning not everyone is meant for every role.

Though speculation was doing the rounds that he might join politics after he met West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankar couple of times recently, Ganguly has kept himself away from any political rally or meeting any person from any political party.

Though some leaders managed to sneak in and met him when he was hospitalised twice when he had to undergo angioplasty following his heart attack in January, Ganguly has remained non-committal and continued to project himself as a busy sports administrator.

It is important to mention here that Ganguly has refrained from answering any political question in any of his recent interviews or interaction with the media saying that he is a sportsperson and wants to restrict himself only to that.

Even Bengal BJP president Dilip Ghosh has no idea about Ganguly joining BJP or politics and whether he will attend the PM Narendra Modi’s rally in Kolkata on Sunday.
