Sourav Ganguly DUMPED? As per reports, he kept to himself at the BCCI headquarters in Mumbai. He was the last to leave all by himself. There were no one by his side, exactly like he lost the selectors, BCCI during his last days of captaincy. As for the BCCI Elections, the candidates completed the nomination process a day before the official deadline on October 12.
Furthermore, Sourav Ganguly’s ICC dream is also over. The officials clearly expressed that they won’t back him for the ICC chairman role, nor as BCCI representative to the ICC.
“He clearly looked upset, disappointed and dejected,” a source close to the development told Cricbuzz.
Why is Ganguly forced out? The official reason is that no president has continued for two terms. But it was N Srinivasan who emerged as a vocal critique of Ganguly. The 72-year-old dropped by BCCI meeting in Mumbai and criticised him for his “non-performance.”
Later, BCCI Vice-President Rajeev Shukla confirmed the new office-bearers.
“Roger Binny has filed nomination for president’s post, myself for the vice-president’s post. Jay Shah for secretary and Ashish Shelar for treasurer and Devajit Saikia have filed nominations for joint secretary’s post,” Rajeev Shukla told reporters.
“Arun Dhumal will head the IPL governing council and Avishek Dalmiya will be part of that council. Khairul Jamal (Mamun) Majumdar will be part of the Apex council. As of now these are the nominations and all are unopposed,” Shukla added.

BCCI Elections LIVE: Why did Sourav Ganguly lose the board’s trust?
- Unlike his tenure as a CAB President, Ganguly did not get credit for any of BCCI’s accomplishments during 2019-2022.
- BCCI successfully conducted IPL 2022 during Covid without much hassle. But Jay Shah received the credit.
- Jay Shah and Arun Dhumal also get credits for bringing in over Rs 48,000 Crore to BCCI coffers through IPL Media Rights deal.
- For Ganguly, the former Indian captain instead was caught in a public feud with one of the most celebrated Indian cricketers Virat Kohli.
- Kohli sort of called Ganguly a liar while the former captain wanted to show-cause him for that.
- That the two former captains do not share a good rapport was evident when Kohli didn’t put up a post for Ganguly on his birthday.
- Kohli wishes everyone on his birthday on his Instagram account, including the obscure support staff but not Ganguly.
- Sourav Ganguly also did not manage to win any support after endorsing rivals to BCCI sponsors.
- An example: Ganguly endorses Classplus an edtech firm when Byju’s has been one of BCCI’s biggest sponsors.
- Ganguly also endorsed Xiaomi when Vivo was the IPL title sponsor.
- Sourav Ganguly was also reported to be attending selection meetings when he was not supposed to.
- However, there is more to it. Ganguly was close to BJP when he took over from Anurag Thakur.
- He was tipped to stand in as BJP’s face in West Bengal elections.
- But his refusal to criticise West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee and not joining BJP did not work in his favour.
- Despite meetings with BJP top brass besides Home Minister Amit Shah, he kept himself out of politics.
- His biggest accomplishments however will be bringing in Rahul Dravid as head coach and VVS Laxman as the NCA director.
At present, BCCI is more political than ever. The secretary is Amit Shah’s son. The incoming treasurer Ashish Shelar is a bigwig of BJP in Maharashtra politics. Arun Dhumal, the nest IPL Chairman is Sports Minister Anurag Thakur’s younger brother. Incoming Apex Council member Rohan Jaitley is former Finance Minister Arun Jaitley’s son.
Hence, without any political backing or endorsing BJP’s ideology, Ganguly had no chance of surviving in BCCI.
What’s NEXT for Ganguly? His immediate future isn’t clear. He was offered the IPL Chairman role. But he refused. With no backing for the ICC chair role, he will have to either go back to CAB or take up a commentary role. Another stint with JSW-backed Delhi Capitals can never be ruled out. He shares a great rapport with Parth Jindal and JSW group.
