BCCI New Selection Committee: BCCI entrusts Chetan Sharma for India Cricket Overhaul, 5 BIG DECISIONS coming in New Year from selection committee, Check OUT

The year 2023 presents a massive challenge for Indian cricket. Amidst all these the new selection committee are expected to take some harsh decisions, for the betterment of Indian cricket.

Decision Number 1

Appoint Hardik Pandya as permanent T20 skipper

2023 in all likelihood will witness the men’s cricket team ushering into a new era, at least in the T20 mode. Hardik Pandya has taken over the reins of Indian cricket in T20s, and the team bears a fresh look of youngsters with no baggage. Suryakumar Yadav has been named the vice captain. The official announcement of Hardik Pandya as India’s T20 captain is yet to be made, but it looks like a mere formality now. If this happens, then this will be the first time Indian cricket will officially adopt a split captaincy, with Rohit Sharma in charge of the Test and ODI sides.

Decision Number 2

Phasing out seniors from T20I side

The indications were there, when the outgoing national selectors opted to draft in young blood in place of experienced stalwarts for the home series against Sri Lanka. The likes of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Ravi Ashwin, Dinesh Karthik, Mohammed Shami and Bhuvneshwar Kumar were all been left out of the T20 squad. Reports say that the BCCI has informed the seniors that they are no longer planning to participate in the 2024 T20 World Cup.

Former India opener Gautam Gambhir also backs the decision to draft in fresh legs in place of seniors and prepare well for the next World Cup.

“There should be clarity. There should be good communication between the selectors and these players. If the selectors have decided to look beyond these guys, so be it. I think a lot of countries have done that,” Gambhir told ESPNcricinfo last week.

Even though BCCI hasn’t officially confirmed it, the plans are in motion for India Cricket Overhaul. While Sri Lanka series was just the hint of things to come, NewZealand series will be another. Hardik Pandya is unofficially the official T20 captain while Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and other seniors who have been regular T20 players won’t feature in the national team moving forward.

Decision Number 3

Shortlisting players for T20 World Cup 2024

Soon after Team India was ousted by England at the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia, there were talks about an overhaul of the Indian cricket team in T20Is. The first major signs were shown when the outgoing national selectors gave chances to youngsters like Shivam Mavi, Umran Malik, and others in a bid to prepare for the next T20 World Cup. The new selection committee is likely to stick with the current policy and give the young team under Hardik Pandya enough opportunities to prepare for the ICC event. A few days ago, BCCI secretary Jay Shah announced the shortlisting of the top 20 players in the country. The selectors are also likely to shortlist players for the T20 World Cup in the West Indies and the United States.

Decision Number 4

Succession planning – who after Rohit Sharma in ODIs and Tests?

Rohit Sharma is 35 years old and not getting any younger. In the last year or so, he has struggled with fitness, particularly with the calf and hamstring. Rohit is expected to lead India into the 2023 World Cup, which will be held in India. The more pressing question is who will succeed Rohit Sharma. The new selection committee must also address this question, as Hitman will not be available to lead India in Tests and ODIs indefinitely. There are a few options, including KL Rahul and Suryakumar Yadav, but no one appears to be a front-runner for the position.

Decision Number 5

Rahul Dravid’s future as a coach

Since India’s semi-final exit from the T20 World Cup in Australia, everyone’s attention has been focused on head coach Rahul Dravid’s methods for playing modern-day T20 cricket. Again, following the ODI series loss to Bangladesh in December, questions were raised about player fitness and how unfit players were allowed to play for the national team.

Former Indian cricketer Harbhajan Singh supports split coaching, which is similar to split captaincy in Indian cricket. According to reports, a major decision on whether or not Indian cricket will have split coaching in 2023 can be made following the BCCI’s apex council meeting. The same formula has worked wonders for England, and given the amount of cricket played, the Board may consider using it in the future. Will Rahul Dravid’s workload be reduced or will the new selection committee decide to give the India legend another run to prove his worth as a quality T20 coach?
