BCCI Media Rights set for e-auction on August 31, base price down to 45 Cr per game

Package A consists exclusively of Television rights with a base price set at Rs 20 crore per game. Package B, encompassing digital rights, have a set base price of Rs 25 crore.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) have opted for an e-auction for their bilateral media rights. The BCCI Media Rights Tender was released on Wednesday, with a separate package for broadcast and digital rights. Just like the IPL, there is no provision for a combined bid and interested parties will have to bid separately for both entities. The BCCI had initially expected a windfall north of Rs 100 crore per game, but have tempered their interest amid a lukewarm response. Now, the base price is set at Rs 45 Crore per game for the next 5 years.

The Invitation To Tender (ITT) can be purchased upon submission of a non-refundable fee of INR 15 lakh. As per Cricbuzz, Package A consists exclusively of Television rights with a base price set at Rs 20 crore per game. Package B, encompassing digital rights, have a set base price of Rs 25 crore. The figures were set after the IPL Media Rights Auction that saw digital rights fetch more than TV for the first time.

While BCCI had initially set lofty ambitions of bagging in excess of Rs 100 crore per game, their expectations have been tempered by a lukewarm response. The Indian Cricket Board still expects to at least bag as much as it did during the last sale of the media rights.

Highlights of BCCI Media Rights Tender:

  • The new deal will be for 5 years as is the case for IPL.
  • Both digital and TV rights will be separate as there has been an upward trend in digital.
  • There will be an e-auction instead of a closed bidding process.
  • BCCI has set a base price of Rs 45 crore per game for the upcoming cycle.
  • The Tender includes 88 matches: 25 Tests, 27 ODIs, and 36 T20Is.
  • In the new cycle, there will be more number T20s and less number of ODIs as there has been a lack of interest from the audience in ODIs.
  • BCCI expect to bag at least Rs 60 Cr per match.

Disney-Star paid Rs 6138.10 Crore for 103 matches last time out. It made per match valuation of Rs 61 Cr. However, BCCI retains the option of cancelling the entire process should the packages fall short of Rs 60 crore.

The date for the e-auction is set for August 31, a whole two weeks after the initially set date. BCCI’s advisors, Ernst & Young advised for the online process in a bid to rake in more returns from the sale. Additionally, companies with a net worth of Rs 1000 crore are eligible to participate in the bidding. The five-year cycle will consist of 88 games: 25 Tests, 27 ODIs, and 36 T20Is. The IND vs AUS ODIs will be the first series under the new cycle.
