As per Cricbuzz, BCCI will finalise its new media rights deal in July following the World Test Championship final. BCCI Secretary Jay Shah revealed that the sale process will begin in July and will be applicable for September when Australia tour India for an ODI series.
In the meantime, India does host Afghanistan in a short limited-overs series. For the same, the Indian cricket board is considering a short-term solution. The series was scheduled to add further games to India’s calendar and boost their preparation ahead of a home World Cup.
“The BCCI Media Rights tender will be on schedule this year (June-July) and will depend on the Afghanistan tour, but more likely the process will start from the Australia series. The Board will speak to all stakeholders concerned and will come up with an interim decision,” Jay Shah BCCI Secretary said, as quoted by Cricbuzz.
BCCI’s previous agreement with Star lapsed in March and the richest cricket board is without a broadcaster for domestic games. Star and BCCI have had their issues, with the former having sought discounts in payments during the previous cycle. Nonetheless, Disney Star will be in the race for the rights alongside regular competitors Sony-Zee, Viacom18 and FanCode.
Any new arrangement will take a minimum of 45 days to be executed. Jay Shah hinted that the process should be done by July with the announcement on the way. Just like the IPL, BCCI will hand over the sale of rights to an external agency. The Indian cricket board hired KPMG for the sale of the IPL rights last year. The result was there to see – BCCI bagged a whopping price of Rs 48,390 crore ($ 6.2 billion), with Star and Viacom winning the rights.
