BCCI introduces incentive scheme for Test cricketers, major shot in the arm for longest-format in India

This incentive will be provided on top of the match fees earned by players for playing in a Test match.

BCCI secretary Jay Shah on Saturday announced an incentive scheme for Test cricketers in India. Shah took to Twitter soon after India’s win in the IND vs ENG 5th Test to announce the incentive.

The incentive is being seen as an attempt on part of the Indian Cricket Board to attract players to the game’s traditional format especially after India players like Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan refused to take part in domestic cricket. However, this incentive will be provided on top of the match fees earned by players for playing in a Test match and will be applicable from the 2022-23 season.

Announcing the incentive, Jay Shah wrote, “I am pleased to announce the initiation of the ‘Test Cricket Incentive Scheme’ for Senior Men, a step aimed at providing financial growth and stability to our esteemed athletes. Commencing from the 2022-23 season, the ‘Test Cricket Incentive Scheme’ will serve as an additional reward structure on top of the existing match fee for Test matches, set at INR 15 lakhs.”

According to the incentive chart posted by Jay Shah on X (previously Twitter) cricketers who play or are selected for more than 4 Test matches in a 9-match season (less than 50%) will be eligible for the incentive.

Incentive Scheme

Players who play a minimum of 7 or more Test matches (75% or more) in a 9-match season are set to receive a whopping sum of Rs 45 lakh per match from BCCI as part of its incentive scheme. While Indian players who are part of the squad for 7 matches or more will earn Rs 22.5 lakhs per match.
