BCCI forcing Rohit Sharma into Test retirement? Selectors to have chat with Virat Kohli after BGT

Rohit Sharma's averaging 6.20 after 3 matches in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy, while Virat Kohli has scored 84 runs in 7 innings barring that Perth hundred.

Rohit Sharma isn’t in the scheme of things anymore. The Indian captain who was dropped earlier in the day, when the playing XI for the 5th Test against Australia was out, has been directly told by the selectors that he isn’t in the reckoning anymore. According to Indian Express, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had informed Rohit Sharma before the Sydney Test.

Rohit Sharma out of India’s Test team

Then, he sat with head coach Gautam Gambhir and BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar that it was right to drop the captain. This meant that Shubman Gill came back into the side, and Jasprit Bumrah, who led Team India in Perth, also took over the side for the last match of the India vs Australia Test series.

Rohit looked uninspiring both as a batter and captain with no signs of improvement. With young batters already there and Bumrah ready to take over, it didn’t seem a tough decision to let go of Rohit. It seems like the opener may have played his last Test match. Perhaps if Team India reaches the World Test Championship (WTC) final, then he might be given another game; otherwise, it seems curtains on his red-ball career.

Call on Virat Kohli’s future to be taken after BGT

Once the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 is over, the selector will also have a chat with Virat Kohli. Although the former Indian skipper hasn’t been as poor as Rohit Sharma, it’s not much better. His returns since 2020 have been slim, and his average is a little over 26 in the ongoing Test series. With batters like Devdutt Padikkal, Sai Sudharsan, Dhruv Jurel, and Sarfaraz Khan waiting, it seems right to have a chat with Kohli about his Test future.

Ravindra Jadeja to continue

But that’s where the transition will stop. Ravichandran Ashwin has already retired, and the selectors aren’t going to discuss Ravindra Jadeja‘s future just yet. The all-rounder has proven time and again how dependable he is both at home and away. For now, Jadeja will continue.
