BCCI Election on Sep 29, no clear favourite to replace Jay Shah as secretary yet

Roger Binny is expected to stay on as the BCCI president for one more term. However, there is no clarity yet to on who will replace Jay Shah as the next BCCI secretary.

The date is out for the BCCI Election. Although the secretary election is not on the agenda for the Annual General Meeting (BCCI AGM) on Sep 29 in Bengaluru, the Indian Cricket Board has released the election schedule, asking the state associations to submit their nominees. While Roger Binny is likely to stay on as the BCCI president for another term, there must be an election for a new secretary who will replace Jay Shah.

After a highly successful stint as the BCCI secretary, he moved to the ICC. As he will take charge as the next ICC chairman in December, BCCI will need a new secretary.

But it must be noted that the election schedule is mainly for electing two members into the IPL governing council apart from a representative of the Indian Cricketers’ Association. If the AGM does not include the election of the secretary, BCCI will have to call a Special General Meeting or SGM to elect Jay Shah’s replacement after December 1.

BCCI Election Schedule

BCCI has instructed all state associations to submit their nominees by September 24, 4 PM. Valid nominations will be announced on Sep 25 while candidates can withdraw their name by Sep 26, 1 PM. The final list of candidates will be out on Sep 26, 3 PM. AK Joti is the electoral officer like last time.

No clear favourite for BCCI Secretary

As the BCCI secretary, Jay Shah proved himself as an excellent administrator. He was instrumental in the phenomenal growth of the BCCI’s financial might through the sale of IPL and WPL media rights as well as franchises. In total, BCCI raked in Rs 60,000 crore from all the sales, significantly boosting BCCI’s financial power.

However, unlike the last two BCCI elections, there is no clear favourite this time. With Jay Shah moving to the ICC, BCCI needs a strong hand and mind for the next phase. DDCA President Rohan Jaitley is all set to be a prominent figure in the election. But when he was asked about his future in the BCCI, he chose to remain silent.

The current IPL chairman Arun Dhumal could have been the favourite. But he will need to take a cooling off period as per the BCCI constitution.

BCCI treasurer Ashish Shelar is also one of the potential candidates to replace Jay Shah. However, at this moment, do not rule out any surprises.
