BCCI eases pressure on umpires in IPL 2025, technology to help decide wide-balls

The IPL 2025 Captain's meet saw a flurry of changes -- right from the removal of saliva ban on ball, to use of HawkEye for deciding wides.

IPL 2025 is to witness another rule change. Now, HawkEye technology will be used to better judge the wide balls, which will aid the umpires. The decision was taken during the captain’s meeting in Mumbai on Thursday.

Umpires Job Made Easy in IPL 2025

“Hawk eye and ball tracking will be used to decide on the height wides and wides outside the off-stump,” news agency PTI quoted an informed official as saying. Last year in IPL 2024, the HawkEye was used for judging the waist high no-balls.

Meanwhile, wides and no-balls were already under the purview of DRS since last year itself. But then there was no ball-tracking for wides, like it was for no-balls. “The referrals for wides and bouncers should be done away with because they upset the rhythm and flow of the game. It is never going to have an impact on the game, like a wrong decision for out or not out can. So, its removal is a must,” Sunil Gavaskar had written in his column for Sportstar.

Decision Made at Captain’s Meet

Apart from that, at the IPL 2025 captain’s meet, the BCCI also removed the ban on bowlers from using saliva on the ball. A lot of senior players, including Mohammed Shami had advocated for that change. If that is not enough, a second new ball will be used in the second innings of the match, due to dew, starting from the 11th over.

Earlier, it seems there were discussions held over the controversial impact sub rule, but no decision was made on the same. In fact, the rule will continue in the league for more time. Now, all these above changes will come into effect when KKR take on RCB in Kolkata on March 22.
