The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has confirmed that Rohit Sharma will continue to lead the Indian team in the ODI and Test formats. This comes with a wave of optimism, with BCCI Secretary Jay Shah expressing confidence in India’s chances of winning the upcoming Champions Trophy 2025 and the World Test Championship (WTC) Final 2025.
Building on T20 World Cup Triumph: Jay Shah
“I am confident that under the captaincy of Rohit Sharma, we will win the WTC Final and the Champions Trophy,” declared Shah in a BCCI video message.
This announcement follows India’s exhilarating victory in the T20 World Cup 2024, where they defeated South Africa under Sharma’s leadership. This win marked the end of India’s 11-year wait for an ICC title and their second T20 World Cup triumph.
Rohit Sharma leads the way
Rohit Sharma’s leadership has already seen India reach two major ICC finals in the past year – the ODI World Cup 2023 and the WTC Final 2023 – where they finished runners-up to Australia.
Shah dedicated the T20 World Cup win to outgoing head coach Rahul Dravid and the senior trio of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja, who all recently announced their retirement from T20I cricket.

Shah also commended the contributions of several young talents, including Suryakumar Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, and Hardik Pandya, who played pivotal roles in India’s dramatic comeback during the final overs of the T20 World Cup final.
Uncertain Champions Trophy 2025 location
The Champions Trophy 2025 is scheduled to be held in Pakistan in February-March next year. While BCCI has confirmed India’s participation, it remains to be seen if the team will travel to Pakistan due to ongoing political tensions between the two nations.
Looking Ahead to WTC Final 2025
India is currently leading the points table in the ongoing WTC cycle, with Australia close behind. They have three more Test series to play in the league stage – against Bangladesh, New Zealand, and Australia – before the WTC Final takes place in 2025.
With Rohit Sharma at the helm, Indian cricket fans can look forward to an exciting future with a team determined to add more silverware to the trophy cabinet.
