The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has called for an urgent apex council meeting to find a replacement for Jay Shah, the last BCCI Secretary, and Ashish Shelar, the previous treasurer. As per BCCI’s bylaws, a Special General Meeting has to be called in 45 days when an office bearer resigns.
Hunt for new BCCI Secretary begins
The BCCI has appointed former chief election commissioner Achal Kumar Jyoti as the electoral officer to conduct the polls for the positions of BCCI secretary and treasurer. Which, as per the board, needs to be appointed four weeks before the poll takes place. Right now, Devajit Saikia, who was the joint secretary, has been appointed as the interim secretary.
“As the posts of Honorary Secretary and Honorary Treasurer have been vacated, the same are required to be filled up for the remaining period at a Special General Meeting by way of elections. In this regard, the Apex Council is requested to approve the appointment of Mr. Achal Kumar Jyoti, former Chief Election Commissioner of India, as the Electoral Officer to conduct BCCI elections at a Special General Meeting,” an official BCCI document read as per PTI.
Saikia is expected to hold the post until January, and after that, the new BCCI Secretary would take over until the next electoral polls take place in November, 2025.
