BCCI bows down to Gambhir’s demands, Morne Morkel likely to be India bowling coach after Sri Lanka tour

BCCI bows down to Gambhir’s demands, Morne Morkel likely to be India bowling coach after Sri Lanka tour

Morne Morkel's previous experience includes serving as the bowling coach for the Lucknow Super Giants and Pakistan.

In a significant move, the BCCI has agreed to most of the choices proposed by India’s new head coach, Gautam Gambhir, for his support staff. This decision marks a new era for Indian cricket as it prepares for its upcoming tour of Sri Lanka.

Key appointments by BCCI

Former India all-rounder Abhishek Nayar has been named the team’s assistant coach, and ex-Dutch player Ryan ten Doeschate will join the squad for the white-ball series against Sri Lanka.

Although there will be no dedicated batting coach, Nayar’s role will include a focus on the batters. Both Nayar and Gambhir have been given three-year contracts.

Morne Morkel as India Bowling Coach

A notable addition to the coaching staff is former South African fast bowler Morne Morkel, who is set to become India’s new bowling coach. Morkel’s experience and expertise are expected to bolster India’s bowling attack significantly. The quick, who’s helped Lucknow Super Giants bowlers like Mayank Yadav, Mohsin Khan, and Yash Thakur, will likely join the Indian team after the Sri Lanka series.

“The formalities haven’t been completed yet but they will hopefully be done soon and Morne Morkel is likely to come on board after the Sri Lanka series,” a source told News18.

The only member retained from former head coach Rahul Dravid’s staff is fielding coach T. Dilip, who has been praised for his excellent work.

Official Announcement pending by BCCI

The BCCI has yet to confirm these appointments officially. However, a press conference is scheduled for Monday in Mumbai, where Gambhir will be unveiled as the new head coach. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar will also be present at the event.

India Tour of Sri Lanka

The Indian team is set to depart from Mumbai to Colombo on Monday via a chartered flight. The Sri Lanka tour will include three T20Is, starting on July 27, and three ODIs, beginning on August 2. To ensure smooth coordination and planning, chief selector Ajit Agarkar will accompany the team on this tour.

Building strong Support Staff for India

Gambhir’s choice of support staff reflects his strategic thinking and commitment to building a strong team. “Even though he was a mentor with the Kolkata Knight Riders during just the 2024 season of the IPL, Gambhir was impressed with Nayar and Ten Doeschate’s work at the franchise, which went on to win IPL 2024,” a source told TOI.

Abhishek Nayar impact

Abhishek Nayar has been instrumental in preparing the bench strength and developing domestic players. His efforts have led to KKR producing 11 India players in the last seven years, with significant contributions from Nayar since 2018.

Players like Shubman Gill, Shreyas Iyer, Varun Chakaravarthy, and Venkatesh Iyer have risen through the ranks under his mentorship.
