BCCI AGM LIVE – BCCI Supreme Court Verdict: The Supreme Court has given BCCI the license to amend its constitution yet again. But the amendments will once again lead to a big shake-up. The Annual General Meeting of BCCI is coming up in the last week of September. The next week will be crucial as the Indian board will take a call on both President Sourav Ganguly and Secretary Jay Shah. Apart from that, BCCI’s representative to the ICC will also be decided. Decisions BCCI will take next week:

  • When will be BCCI elections?
  • Who will be BCCI’s representative to the ICC?
  • What happens to Sourav Ganguly & Jay Shah?

Earlier this week, the Supreme Court allowed the BCCI to remove the 70-year age cap and revised the cooling-off period definition. While that has allowed both Ganguly and Shah to continue, it has other implications.

What happens to Sourav Ganguly & Jay Shah? – As per reports from BCCI, many state associations are in favour of calling a fresh election, handing the President’s post to Jay Shah. But as a decorated personality, it is unlikely that Sourav Ganguly will go away. Instead, he is likely to be given a promotion to either become BCCI’s representative to the ICC or contest ICC Elections in November.

“The decisions in Supreme Court are still being discussed by the members and we will take a call on the next move soon. I cannot tell you that there will be fresh elections but one can certainly not rule it out. There are many powerplays and situations involved in coming to a decision. Before the AGM, we will have a clear picture,” a BCCI official told InsideSport.

InsideSport understands that Ganguly is keen on the ICC Chairman post as he graduates from a player to the CAB and BCCI. Before the Supreme Court verdict, it was the likely plan that he would contest ICC elections, handing the reins to Shah.

But the change in cooling-off period has given more power to Shah than ever. He is favourite of many state associations and as per reports, at least 15 state units are set to back him. Many believe he is responsible for keeping the IPL in India while BCCI’s rich earnings from IPL Media Rights is also another feather in his cap.

On the other hand, Sourav Ganguly hasn’t done anything significant barring convincing Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman to take up India head coach role and NCA Director role. Shah has ruled the BCCI with might while Ganguly’s public fallout with ex-captain Virat Kohli hasn’t been taken kindly by the state associations.

BCCI AGM LIVE: The big decisions to be taken before AGM –

  • The Supreme Court’s two crucial decisions on removing 70-year age cap and revising the cooling-off period has opened the floor.
  • The old guns like Srinivasan could be back.
  • The revised cooling off-period of 6 years also allows both Ganguly and Shah to continue.
  • Hence, the board will have to take a call on whether to endorse Ganguly for the ICC Chairman post or continue the way it is now.
  • It is likely that, the board will go for fresh elections during AGM, allowing Shah to get the President’s post.
  • Ganguly will be removed from BCCI but only to go ahead to the ICC.
  • A call will have to be taken on who will represent BCCI at the ICC.
  • Although N Srinivasan is favourite, the board will take a call on someone like Brijesh Patel or Rajeev Shukla.

Who will be BCCI’s representative to the ICC? – However, it is not just Shah fraction that is powerful. Former chief N Srinivasan still has influence inside the board and one cannot rule out his comeback. He is back in the picture after the removal of age cap.

Sourav Ganguly and Rajeev Shukla’s names have also come up to represent the board. However, it is likely that the former Indian captain will pass it to the more experienced member, namely Shukla. Brijesh Patel is also set to continue as the age cap has been removed. Hence, he too will be eligible.

“It is an interesting situation. Mr Srinivasan is definitely a powerful member and also an asset for the board. He has single-handedly helped BCCI retain more power than other boards in the ICC. So, he is certainly one of the favourites. But at the same time, he is 77 and with his declining health, it is doubtful how well he could serve the BCCI at the ICC,” the official said.

BCCI set for Elections? – If Srinivasan returns to the picture, he is favoured to represent BCCI at the ICC. But it will also shake up the office bearers. Shah is likely to be the next President with one of Brijesh Patel or Arun Dhumal taking up the Secretary role. Ganguly will have no other option to contest the ICC Elections in November.

With good relations with Cricket South Africa, England, besides West Indies, Sri Lanka and other smaller boards, Ganguly will have a good chance of winning the elections. However, if Graig Barclay decides to contest for a second term, Ganguly will have a big fight to win.

While the BCCI President has not made his intentions clear, the BCCI will take a call by next week.
