After facing a 152-run record defeat in the tournament opener, Glenn Maxwell’s side managed to open the account with a thrilling 4-run win over Sydney Thunder on Friday. Put into bat, Stars once again had a troublesome start as they lost both the openers inside the powerplay but managed to post a good total of 165/4 on the back of Nick Larkin’s unbeaten 53 coupled with H Cartwright’s quickfire 40 runs.
Sydney Thunder too faced a similar fate as both openers – Alex Hales and Sam Whiteman – departed inside the powerplay. Matthew Gilkes and Sam Billings then resurrected the innings with an 89-run partnership before Qais Ahmad brought Melbourne Stars back in the game by removing Sam Billings. Eventually, 11 were needed for the final over and Adam Zampa bowled it superbly giving away just 6 runs.

The Stars will be looking to make it double over the Thunder but they need skipper Glenn Maxwell, Adam Zampa, and others to chip in. Marcus Stoinis who missed the opening game too couldn’t do much in Friday’s game. Sydney Thunder, on the other hand, will be looking to level the score with Maxwell’s side with the home conditions in their favour.
