“Bata zara..”: Sanju Samson reveals how interaction with Suryakumar helped him notch his maiden ton

Sanju Samson, after getting a lot of chances in T20Is, finally came good, when he smashed 111 in 47 deliveries vs Bangladesh in Hyderabad.

Sanju Samson is perhaps that one cricketer, that every Indian cricket team fan, wants him to do well in whatever opportunity he gets. But for long, his career was in doldrums, as he could hardly come up with performances of substance. But that took a sharp turn, when Sanju came up with his maiden T20I ton vs Bangladesh in Hyderabad this month.

Sanju Samson on Maiden Ton

He smashes a wonderful 111 from 47 deliveries only to, kind of, cement his place in the Indian team. Speaking about his innings, Sanju Samson revealed, that skipper Suryakumar Yadav did have a part to play in his ton. In fact, the duo had a partnership of 173, where the latter scored 75.

“When I’m with the Indian team, it is usually for a small duration, so there is hardly any exchange of ideas,” Sanju told Vimal Kumar on his Youtube channel. “I never really got a chance to ask Surya, ‘what are you doing to be the best in the world in this format’. So during Delhi nets, that was the interaction I was having with him. That is what I wanted to know from him, ‘bata zara ki kya chal raha hai’. And he was very transparent about it, he shared ideas with me, his ups and downs. Not just that, I also shared my story with him.”

Sanju & Suryakumar Yadav’s Bond

That interaction seemed to have worked wonders for the Kerala man, who was coming on the back of a few poor scores, in the series vs Sri Lanka. His relationship with Surya also helped.

“Surya and I have played a lot of junior cricket together, and then we work for BPCL, and have played a lot of games there. So even before playing for India, we knew each other very well, and there was a connection. I have seen his journey, and how Surya has become the Surya that he is today. I’ve seen his struggle. Then when you become the Indian team’s skipper, the respect only grows.”
