Odisha, already a prominent sponsor of Indian hockey, is taking a major step towards becoming a force in cricket as well. The state government, in collaboration with the Odisha Cricket Association (OCA) and the BCCI will transform the iconic Barabati stadium in Cuttack into a world-class sports complex as per General secretary, Odisha Cricket Association (OCA), Sanjay Behera.
Barabati Stadium to Get Makeover:
The existing stadium, built in 1952, will be completely demolished and rebuilt with modern facilities catering not only to cricket but also other sports disciplines.
The seating capacity will be increased from 42,000 to 60,000, offering spectators an enhanced experience with improved access, parking, viewing arrangements, and amenities.
More Than Just Cricket:
The development around the stadium goes beyond the sporting arena. Plans include a retail mall, a 5-star hotel, office spaces, and a public plaza, transforming the area into a vibrant hub. This project aims to not only promote sports but also contribute to the overall development of Cuttack.
Focus on Women’s Cricket:
Recognizing the potential of women’s cricket, Odisha will establish a Women’s Cricket Academy in Puri to nurture talent and provide training opportunities. This initiative aligns with the state’s commitment to promoting gender equality in sports.
Boosting Local Talent:
To elevate the level of domestic cricket, a high-standard state-level league with proper broadcast facilities will be launched. This platform will provide aspiring cricketers with a chance to showcase their skills and compete at a higher level.
Overall Impact:
Odisha’s ambitious plans for cricket development hold immense potential. The revamped Barabati stadium, the Women’s Cricket Academy, and the state-level league are significant steps towards creating a robust cricketing ecosystem in the state.
These initiatives, combined with Odisha’s existing sponsorship of national hockey teams, demonstrate the state’s commitment to becoming a major player in the world of sports.
